ISCAR Press

  The new tangential milling system with the butterfly-shaped insert
  ISCAR is introducing a new unique milling system with tangential, clamped, butterfly-shaped LNKX inserts. The butterfly-shaped insert has significant advantages compared to the current flat, square shapes. The new geometry has more cutting edges, positive rake face, reduced cutting forces resulting in higher performance. The inserts are screw-clamped on the periphery of various milling cutter types, providing optimal conditions also for heavy-duty applications with excellent surface quality, saving additional finishing operations. Cutters are available for 90˚ shoulder milling and for facing with 45˚ lead angles.

Each insert has eight cutting edges, four for right-hand and four for left-hand cutting, improving the economy of use. The two, toward-center-slanted cutting edges provide on one side strong and accurate clamping of insert in the tool body, and on the other side, the positive axial rake angle. The use of this positive axial rake design decreases the cutting forces due to softer cut and easier penetration into the material, as well as changing force direction which is essential for use on modern machining centers with pallet systems less rigid than on the traditional transfer lines.

In normal applications like in the automotive industry, the depth-of-cut is less than 7.5mm [0.3 inch] enabling the use of all eight cutting edges of the TANGMILL inserts. Furthermore, in the automotive industry it is common to use a pair of cutters, one for right- and one for left-handed operations, which means that all eight cutting edges of the TANGMILL inserts can be used.

The two available inserts are the LNKX 1106 and LNKX 1506 with 11 and 15mm [0.44 and 0.60 inch] maximum cutting edge length are used for a maximum of 10 and 14mm depths of cut [0.4 and 0.56 inch]. Normally, only half the length, meaning 5 and 7mm [3/16 and 9/16 inch] are used. Inserts are peripherally ground for high accuracy and high surface quality. The excellent surface quality [without a special wiper insert] of Ra≤ 0.8μm [32μinch] is achieved in all machining conditions, like feed, depth-of-cut, cutting speed and workpiece materials. In normal conditions the achieved surface value range is even better,
Ra = 0.2-0.8 μm [RCLA = 8-32μinch].

Two different molded chipformers are available - the LNKN 1506 PN-T-MM with a wide chipformer groove for steel, and the LNKN 1506 PNTN for cast iron - both with positive rake angles. They reduce cutting forces, improve surface quality , and provide easier chip flow. A new LNKX 1506 PN-N PL insert with even a more positive land is designed to provide machining with no chipping on nodular cast iron and gray cast-iron workpiece edges.

For all carbon steel and alloy steel types, the new TiAlN PVD coated submicron grade IC928 and for cast iron, the PVD coated IC910 grade are recommended.

Milling cutters in the range of 63-250mm [2.5 - 10 inch] diameters with coarse and fine pitch are designed for face-, shoulder- and slot-milling operations in roughing and finishing in one operation.

Excellent performance is achieved in the automotive industry machining face and crank shaft cases of the engine blocks, block heads, pivot bearings, steering knuckles, and gear boxes.
