ISCAR presents its unique milling concept for plunging with high material removal rates. This system incorporates a combination of drilling and milling operations into a single tool. When plunging, the tools are subjected mainly to axial forces - with minimal radial forces compared to those involved in conventional side machining of cavities. Machining in the axial direction results in increased stability, higher feeds and longer tool life.
This new tool provides efficient metal removal rates in a variety of applications, including the machining of deep cavities, high shoulders, slots and straight or sloped walls.
Two types of cutters are available. One type is for plunging into solid material - similar to a drill - in the axial direction only. The second tool type is based on HELIQUAD inserts for side plunging with a limited frontal width and for finishing with side cutting.
ISCAR's PLUNGERS are available in a variety of sizes and types for a wide range of applications. These endmills and arbor clamping cutters feature a variety of clamping options to handle roughing under high loads. The HELIQUAD PLUNGER, designated PLC, is a multi-function tool for side plunging operations as well as for light peripheral milling in semi-finishing conditions. These tools are equipped with standard HELIQUAD SDMT inserts with 4 helical cutting edges. The inserts, with their 12 mm (.472") cutting edge length, can be used for plunging to a maximum frontal width of 10.5 mm (.413").
The other type of plungers (PH) are equipped with special tangential type inserts. The PH is a milling cutter with a central cut for plunging into solid material. It is recommended for deep cavities and functions with minimum overlapping between successive cuts. The PH cutters are equipped with ISCAR's new PLHT 1305 PDX double-sided inserts (four cutting edges).
The rake face of the insert is produced with large rake angles and deep chip deflectors to facilitate chip flow. This new family of tools can provide material reductions of machining costs in industries manufacturing dies and molds and turbine blades, as well as other applications requiring efficient cavity or deep wall machining. With ISCAR PLUNGERS, only a few tools are required to machine a great variety of complicated shapes with high removal rates. ISCAR PLUNGERS can cut cavity machining time in half.
